| Customer Reviews: Average Rating: 4.5/5 | | Best gadget I've ever bought!: Rating: 5/5 |
I'm by no means a photographer, but I bought this camera almost two years ago with a view to learning the art myself. Because its been such a popular model, finding books or cheap second hand lenses and accessories for it is really easy. For me, that alone makes it a better buy than most.
The quality of the images it produces are stunning, especially if you replace the average lens it comes with, with something a little better. A great lens to start with is a Canon 50mm f1.8 which you can buy on Amazon for around £60. It'll show you how good this camera really is within about 5 minutes, even in auto mode.
The updated 500D and 550D don't add much to the still image quality at all. There, the advantage is video recording, so if you don't need that, stick to this model.
After 18 months with the camera I've finally decided to upgrade, but I thought it wise to come here and let anyone else thinking of buying this as their first camera, to bite the bullet and get involved! I promise, it'll change the way you take holiday snaps forever! | | Good - without standard lens kit: Rating: 4/5 |
Have had this camera for over 2 years now (replaced ultra reliable Canon A1 - 25 years unblemished performance)
Bought with stock 18-55mmIS lens, Tamron 100-300mm zoom which was on offer with the purchase and 4GB Sandisk Extreme SDHC card.
3 inch screen is perfect for photo reviews, lightness and compactness ideal for the basic 'tourist' around town, and ease of use (point and shoot)would suit most people.
Functions vary from simple setting for type of shot (eg portrait, sport etc)to generating professional tweeks here and there (need manual open at all times at these functions or could get lost easily)
Other reviews have stated weakness of not having inbuilt IS (image stability) within the camera, but in lenses. This means paying more when purchasing additional hardware as against other makes that have IS built in. Reviews have also mentioned weakness of stock 18-55 mm lens - buy Sigma alternative (similar price) or more expensive Canon if budget allows.
Has proved to be very reliable over the couple of years, even with the occansional hard knocks it has received. Battery life has been quite exeptional, having taken charger on hols every time and never used it once when away.
If pondering over this camera or 500/550 and cannot wait for price drop against these cameras, buy the 450. | | My first DSLR: Rating: 5/5 |
I have recently purchased this camera,it is my first DSLR and im very impressed so far.
i am using it in AF mode for now til i get more clued up on the other modes!

i have recently purchased the "for dummies" book from amazon on the camera and its taught me such alot alreadye ven a few chapters in!
cant say i have come across any bad points about it so far at all! | | Excellent camera; but: Rating: 4/5 |
| Had this camera over 6 months now and am especially pleased now that I bought the Canon 50mm f1.8 which is when this camera starts to shine. Spent a lot of time researching this entry level DSLR and was torn between it and the Nikon D5000. One thing I've noticed now that I am purchasing other prime lenses for this camera (the standard zoom is really a non-contender, and I'm not an optic snob) is that now Canon is top dog in the market they have a tendency to knobble you now they have "got you". So while Nikon will add a lens hood, Canon won't, and it's pricy for a piece of plastic. Bar the 50mm f1.8 which is a steal, Canon prime lenses are expensive, and for example the price of the old yet excellent EF 35mm f2.0 was jacked up simply because it sells well. A cursory glance at similar Nikon prime lens on Amazon while I was researching Canon lenses seemed to tell me that Nikon did better deals, and I suspect it is still a two-horse race as far as lens quality goes. So while I have no problems with the 450D, I do have a problem with certain Canon marketing policies. Seriously, if you enjoy photograph in any way and you are set to buy a DSLR, good glass is always the next step even if you don't see it at the time of buying the camera (the tendency is always, I'll deal with that later). Key it into your buying strategy NOW rather than LATER, then make a global decision based on what kind of lenses you can get for your camera. Glass makes all the difference, despite all the specs of the body, it's like Pirelli tyres on a Fiat 127. | | Canon EOS 450: Rating: 5/5 |
| A novice, upgrading from a pocket digital camera, I have yet to come to terms with what the 450D can do. It is easy enough to handle, and its quality is good. The included lens is perfectly adequate for my needs at the moment. Additional lens kits can be purchased separately. My only grouse is that the camera package arrived with instructional booklets in French, Italian and Dutch, but not English. By the way, a memory card is not part of the package and should be purchased separately. | |
